Autoimmune Disease Information & Resources

Awareness & Education

Autoimmune diseases are a broad group of conditions in which the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells or tissues. Different autoimmune diseases can affect different organs and body systems, so symptoms, testing, treatment, and day-to-day experiences can vary widely.

Why autoimmune disease can be difficult to recognize

Symptoms depend on the specific condition and the parts of the body involved. Fatigue, fever, joint pain, rashes, and other symptoms may occur in some autoimmune diseases, but those symptoms can also occur for many other reasons. A symptom list cannot diagnose an autoimmune disease.

Diagnosis and treatment are condition-specific

Healthcare professionals use a person’s symptoms, medical history, physical examination, and—when appropriate—laboratory tests, imaging, or other evaluations to investigate autoimmune disease. Treatment depends on the specific diagnosis and how the person is affected. The goal may include controlling an abnormal immune response, reducing inflammation or symptoms, and protecting affected tissues or organs.
